Bengaluru: With a sharp drop in Covid-19 infections, the daily test positivity rate in the city dropped from 27.2% to 11.7% in about ten days.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) health officials say a large portion of the city’s population has been exposed to the virus and most have remained asymptomatic.
Dr AS Balasundar, Director of Health (BBMP), said Covid-19 had now turned into a normal flu.
“Fever, cold, scratchy throat and fatigue are some of the common flu symptoms, and the same pattern is seen in the third wave. The second wave was deadly as death rates were high. But the third wave was milder. Although people are testing positive in large numbers, they recover quickly within about a week,” Balasundar said.
A senior BBMP health official said the third wave appeared to have spared only a few people. “Many infected people might not even be aware of the fact because they have never been tested,” he said.
Dr. Bhaskar Rajakumar, Nodal Officer, War Room (BBMP), cited an example. “If the city’s positivity rate reached 30%, that meant that one in three people tested became positive. Essentially, the majority of the population has been exposed to the virus. »
Almost everyone has developed antibodies due to vaccination or infection and as a result the test positivity rate is decreasing, he added.
Moreover, although the number of tests carried out daily is 80,000, the number of positive tests has increased from 20,000 to 6,000, Rajakumar said.
BBMP (health) special commissioner Dr Thrilok Chandra said cases could decline further and stabilize within 10 days at less than 1,000. as cases fall,” he added.
