“While we were under construction, people knocked on the door saying, ‘I want to schedule my appointment.’ So that confirmed to us that there was a need,” said Kari Vargas, CEO of AdventHealth Winter Garden and West Orange. and the South Lake Market. “We just want to make sure we keep pace with the community.”

The hospital system is expanding across Central Florida with 13 new projects, from a new Palm Coast Parkway Hospital in Flagler County to a new Winter Haven Hospital in Polk County. Each project is built specifically for this area. For example, Clermont’s new Emergency Department and Health Care Park is geared towards the sports and Olympic community, providing green space for outdoor exercise and a gym for physical therapy.

“This area is specific to sports medicine rehabilitation,” said Joel George, director of strategy and operations for Health Parks. “One thing we wanted to do is activate that space for athletes coming in.”

It was the same idea when it came to expanding the new AdventHealth Winter Garden Hospital in West Orange County this summer.

“Orthopaedics has been a recent opportunity. It’s a young community, weekend warriors, lots of kids and sports, so to be able to keep adding programs and services that the community asks for.

Vargas said it’s not just demographics but future growth that they look at when determining where to place a new hospital.

“We look at things like growth rates, we spend a lot of time talking to doctors and our community,” she said.

Another growth opportunity, according to Vargas, is in South Lake County, opening not only the new healthcare park in Clermont, but also an all-new hospital system in Minneola.

“We are seeing explosive growth in South Lake County,” she added.

“We plan to have a hospital on this site for the long term, currently focused on understanding the community and the services we can provide,” Vargas said. “Over the next few years, as Central Florida thrives, we will continue to ensure that we serve our patients close to home.”
