detroit today
Census data recently revealed that a majority of Detroit residents are once again homeowners, not renters.
Last week, a city official came to Detroit Today to defend those numbers. At that time, a housing official said it was “essential” to stabilize homeownership and provide opportunities for homeownership.
This all sounds like good news. Having more owners in Detroit is good. But it’s also part of Detroit’s overall population decline. The CEO of local think tank Detroit Future City joined the program to offer a different perspective on what the new numbers mean.
“I think what’s important to know about this (is that), even with a smaller population, the homeownership rate – what remains – is people who own homes. And that’s a good thing for Detroit”, — Anika Goss, CEO of Detroit Future City.
Hear: why Detroit’s new homeownership rate is good and how to continue the trend.

Anika Goss is the CEO of Detroit Future City, a local think tank. She says it’s good that the number of people owning a house has increased. Goss also notes that while it’s bad that the city’s population has shrunk over the past ten years, it’s good that more city residents are homeowners.
“I think what’s important to know about this (is that), even with a smaller population, the homeownership rate – what remains – is people who own homes. And that’s a good thing for Detroit,” Goss said.
