Population Control Bill: Will India be able to handle its overpopulation crisis?

During the monsoon session, a few members of parliament tabled a bill before President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding a population control bill.

If the bill is passed in the Indian Parliament, the two-child policy will be introduced in the country.

what is a two children Politics?

The two-child policy, known as “hum do humare do”, is a term frequently used in public via advertisements on trucks or on public walls.

The term is not new to Indians, in particular.

A two-child policy is a government-imposed limit of two children allowed per family, with the benefits of government grants given only to the first two children.

  • Since 2016, it has been implemented in China, replacing its previous one-child policy

Two facets of the population in India

With inflation at its highest in India, families these days are getting smaller and smaller as they are not even able to feed a single child.

However, there are still families in rural areas of India where a woman is treated like a machine to produce children. A machine that must produce a certain number of girls until a boy is born, resulting in no family planning.

What does the population control bill say?

The law can be called Population Control Act, 2016 and extends to the whole of India.

According to the law, no one may procreate more than two living children after a period of one year from the entry into force of this law.

India’s population is expected to increase in the future

According to the East Asia Forum report, in 2050 India’s population is expected to be 1.69 billion, which will be larger than that of China.

China’s population is estimated at 1.31 billion in the same year.

Increased demand for water and food

In India, global water demand in 2050 is expected to be more than 50% of what it was in 2000.

According to the same report, the demand for food will double by the year 2050 and even if India manages to feed its growing population, its growth may not be environmentally sustainable.

One-child policy strongly criticized in China

China’s one-child policy

Although China’s one-child policy has been criticized as contrary to dignity and human rights, it has improved and controlled the country’s population of around 400 million people according to the report of the Forum of the Eastern India.

However, in the 2015 IB Times report, the policy was dropped due to government concerns that the country’s aging population could slow economic growth.

It is estimated that by 2050, nearly 440 million people in China will be over the age of 60.

To combat this, China’s ruling party had abandoned the one-child policy and allowed couples in the country to have up to two children.
