Review reveals the 20 most influential people in digital marketing

A study, conducted by Toggle ranking, analyzed the social media profiles of leaders in the SEO and digital marketing industry. This reveals that Hubspot’s Dharmesh Shah is the most influential figure overall, with the highest number of followers and engagement rate on average.

In a sign of more gradual development, four influential women make the list, including Pam Moore, Aleyda Solis and Julie Joyce.

The digital marketing industry continues to evolve and the global market is estimated to be worth $786.2 billion by 2026. Additionally, the SEO industry is worth, at current rates, around $80 billion. It is also a growing industry.

As these industries grow, interest in careers also increases. This is confirmed by Google Trends datawhich shows a 76% increase in global searches for “SEO jobs” over the past 12 months.

As for who the most influential people in the industry are, based on number of Twitter and LinkedIn followers, number of tweets, engagement rate, and mentions, a weighted ranking provides some clues.

Dharmesh Shah, co-founder of Hubspot, tops the list with 1,036,649 Linkedin followers and over 296,000 Twitter followers. Shah was previously the founder and CEO of Pyramid Digital Solutions, a software company. He has also published several books including Inbound marketing: get found through Google.

In second place comes John Rampton, who is an entrepreneur, investor, and online marketing guru. He is also the founder of online payment company Due and productivity company Calendar. He was recently named #2 in the Top 50 Online Influencers in the World by Entrepreneur Magazine and a blogging expert by Time.

With the most Tweets in the study, third place goes to Pam Moore, founder of digital marketing agency Marketing Nutz. Moore composed 134,776 tweets, giving industry advice and opinions to his 285,548 followers.

Two more influential women in SEO feature in the top 10, including Zen Media founder Shama Hyder who comes in ninth place, and international SEO consultant and founder of Orainti, Aleya Solis. Shama Hyder is the most popular on Linkedin with 615,959 followers, while Aleyda Solis has the most followers on Twitter (125,110).

Google’s own public liaison, Danny Sullivan, also made the top five, due to his impressive number of tweets (78,888) and Twitter followers (533,000).
