Mikhail Mishustin’s opening remarks:
Strategy Meeting on Reviving Population Growth in the Far East
Hello, dear colleagues.
In accordance with the instructions of the President, we are holding a strategic meeting to discuss the main tasks to be carried out to ensure the sustainable development of the Russian Far East. Demography is the most important of these.
This is the second meeting on this issue. The first time we talked about ensuring the population growth of this district was during the strategy meeting in October 2021. We defined our priorities, then we had to assess our possibilities, determine the effectiveness of the instruments existing ones and prepare proposals with due regard to national development objectives.
We had to coordinate the proposed initiatives with the relevant agencies. Yury Trutnev and Russian Far Eastern and Arctic Development Minister Alexei Chekunkov oversaw the process.
Today we are going to talk about what we have accomplished. I hope to hear concrete proposals that will help us to make the Far East more attractive.
More than 8 million people live in the regions of this district. This is not a lot for a huge territory including 11 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The president pointed out that the rate of exodus from the Far East has decreased but it has not stopped: in the past three years, the number of local residents has decreased by around 100,000 people.
