Sugar Land’s 2021 crime rate second lowest on record, police say

Sugar Land’s crime rate for 2021 was the second lowest in Texas among cities with populations between 100,000 and 150,000, the Sugar Land Police Department said in a statement Wednesday.

According to the department’s annual report, Sugar Land’s crime rate in 2021 was 52% lower than Texas’s rate for 2020 and 44% lower than the national rate for 2020. Statistics for 2021 are not yet available. The crime rate takes into account homicides, sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, robberies, burglaries, robberies and arson.

“Despite this year’s major challenges and changes, (SLPD) has maintained excellent service to our residents,” said Sugar Land Police Chief Eric Robins.

Sugar Land maintains an investigation resolution rate above the state and national average, according to the report.

In 2021, the SLPD answered 74,316 calls, an increase of 25% compared to 59,245 calls in 2020.

The report shows that assaults increased by 17%, domestic violence by 14% and aggravated assault by 13%.

“We certainly have a number of challenges ahead, but I’m confident we can meet those challenges by working together to ensure our city remains the safest in the country,” Robins said.

Robins continues to focus on community partnerships, public education, technology, hiring, training and corporate leadership development.

Priorities for 2022 include a K-9 program, exercises including active violence scenarios, training, employee development, license plate recognition program expansion, enhanced reporting systems, technology implementations and continued planning for the expansion of a public safety training center.
