Utah reported significantly fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 1,919 new cases. That’s a 22.8% drop from the previous week’s tally of 2,487 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Utah ranked 48th among the states where the coronavirus was spreading the fastest per person, according to a USA TODAY Network analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University. Over the past week, coronavirus cases in the United States have decreased by 0.6% compared to the previous week, with 401,433 cases reported. With 0.96% of the nation’s population, Utah recorded 0.48% of the nation’s cases last week. Across the country, 17 states had more cases in the past week than the previous week.
Utah’s Southwest Health District, which includes Washington, Iron, Kane, Beaver and Garfield counties, has reported one of the lowest new case rates in the state. The district has had more than 69,000 cases during the pandemic, with 678 deaths
Across Utah, cases fell in six counties, with the biggest drops in Salt Lake County, with 808 cases from 1,013 a week earlier; in Davis County, with 234 of 299 cases; and in Utah County, with 279 of 325 cases.

In Utah, the worst weekly outbreaks per person occurred in Summit County with 85 cases per 100,000 per week; Salt Lake County with 70; and Davis County with 66. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission are starting at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

people were reported dead from COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. The previous week, 12 people had been killed.A total of 1,036,535 people in Utah have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 5,011 people have died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 96,070,980 people have tested positive and 1,056,416 people have died.

Utah’s COVID-19 hospital admissions plummet

Hospitals in 13 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 20 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive care beds. Hospitals in 25 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the past week than a week earlier, according to USA TODAY analysis of US Health and Human Services data.
