Waukee sees rapid population growth in past 12 months
Another town in Iowa is booming in terms of population growth. New data released by the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Waukee’s population at 26,495 as of July 1, 2021. This increase equates to an 8.7% year-over-year population increase, according to the City of Waukee. The city says this is the highest percentage growth of any city in the state of Iowa with more than 10,000 residents during the same period. “The city is projecting a 6% population increase each year as part of the budget approval process,” Waukee Mayor Courtney Clarke said. “This is a conservative estimate of population growth, used as a guideline for projections, as well as for planning improvements to infrastructure and resident amenities. However, we are not surprised when the actual numbers exceed our projections. The growth totaled 2,555 new Waukee residents, an average of seven new residents per day. In 2021, 1,761 building permits were issued by the city’s Department of Community Services for a record total value of $330.6 million. Of these 2,021 building permits, 831 were issued for single-family, row and multi-family construction. The city projects Waukee’s population could reach 40,000 by 2030.
