DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The ‘Food Wholesale and Retail in Zambia 2022’ report has been added to from ResearchAndMarkets.com offer.
Wholesale and retail food trade in Zambia
Large foreign-owned retail chains dominate Zambia’s formal food sector, but an estimated 70% of households purchase their food from informal stalls, shops and kiosks, street vendors and markets. Almost 80% of informal workers are employed in agricultural and related activities. Rapid urbanization and a growing population support new opportunities for growth and expansion. The development of supermarket chains in Zambia has improved the availability of products and services and provided Zambian consumers with more choice at competitive prices. However, there are many challenges, including Zambia’s vulnerability to droughts, high inflation, high levels of poverty and a volatile exchange rate.
Imported and local products
Processed foods sold in supermarkets are largely imported due to the limited selection of products supplied by the underdeveloped domestic agricultural and agrifood sectors. The most imported products are fish, frozen foods and fruits and vegetables via South African food chains. There is a growing trend to source locally and major retailers are sourcing and expanding from local suppliers.
Tendencies
Zambia’s high population growth rate will result in high demand for food. Growth in the food retail industry is driven by new store openings, acquisitions, e-commerce, and expansion of distribution channels. The industry is also experiencing increased competition among food retailers. Most businesses focus on improving economies of scale, improving operational efficiency, and diversifying revenue through e-commerce channels, by providing affordable products. Serving smaller towns with cheaper branded stores presents an investment opportunity for large South African retailers with lower priced brands.
