Population growth spurs expansion of local police departments

Planning and preparation are top of mind for the Box Elder Police Department

BOX ELDER, SD — Growth in the area is prompting law enforcement agencies across the Black Hills to begin planning for expansion, with places like Rapid City pushing to open new neighborhoods and increase coverage .

Future population growth is probably most noticeable in Box Elder with the B-21 bomber mission – but it’s not just the men and women of the armed forces moving in, it’s also businesses and foreigners.

“So population expansion has been happening over the last few years. In fact, we were experiencing astronomical growth here in terms of population before we even heard of the expansion with the B-21,” says Jason, Chief of Police of Box Elder. Duplicates.

Chief Dubbs says the police department continues to grow, but how far it’s expanding and where that leads is uncertain.

“Certainly planning, prepping…then planning and prepping in conjunction with our partners – Rapid City, Pennington County, Sturgis…everyone in the area,” Chief Dubbs says. “It’s not like everyone is going to move here; they are everywhere; we are all going to run into the same issues… we all need to be on the same page and work together.

Future plans for infrastructure improvements in the town of Box Elder are still underway, from road improvements to water needs.
