Lucknow: The chairman of the Uttar Pradesh law commission spoke on Sunday about keeping the state’s population under control and refraining from exploiting government resources. Aditya Nath Mittal spoke to ANI and said that the state government does not want to send the message that it is against any particular religion or basic human rights, but that it was essential to control the population in the current situation.
Mittal said: “The population is approaching an explosive stage, also causing other problems related to hospitals, cereals, houses or employment. We believe there should be population control… Population control is different from family planning.

The Chairman of the UP Law Commission further stated, “We don’t want to send the message to UP that we are against any particular religion or anyone’s human rights. We just want to ensure that government resources and facilities are available to those who aid and contribute to population control”
Although Mittal’s statement alludes to a population control policy in the state, there is no official confirmation of this by Yogi Adityanath’s government.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed similar thoughts and said the state government will gradually implement a two-child policy to receive benefits under specific state-funded schemes.
The proposed population control policy, however, will not be applicable in all regimes in Assam in the immediate future, as many benefits are offered by the central government, the chief minister said at the press conference.
A few weeks earlier, Sarma had been criticized by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi for his comment that “many social ills in Assam” could be overcome if “the immigrant Muslim community adopted decent standards of family planning”. .
“To end their poverty, Muslim women must be educated, the population must be controlled. I ask them to work with us. We are here for all of you, to support women’s education and reduce poverty. But poverty will never be reduced unless you control your people,” he said.
